Burn the Rich, not Fossil Fuels banner hung in Grand Rapids

December 7, 2012

Today, GRIID received a media release and pictures of a banner hung in Grand Rapids off the blue bridge that connects GVSU’s Pew Campus campus to the downtown.

The Media Release states as follows:

System Change, Not Climate ChangePicture 1
The governments of the world are currently meeting at the Global Climate Summit in Doha, but it is clear that the leaders of the wealthier countries of the world, like the United States, are opposing any significant changes that are necessary to reduce carbon emissions and avoid further human suffering and environmental destruction.
Global Climate Summits have been taking place for nearly 20 years now and the global powers have been unwilling to stop the devastating effects of both the burning of fossil fuels and the economic system of Capitalism, which is the root cause of climate change.
Almost every day there is new evidence of glaciers melting, waters rising, intense rains, hurricanes, drought, heat waves and unpredictable weather patterns.
Look at the damage that Hurricane Sandy did on the east coast.
We all know something is not right.

The world leaders will not solve this and the media will not tell us the truth about the seriousness of climate change.

It is clear to us that change will only come about from the grassroots, from a rejection of the system of Capitalism and a movement towards climate justice.
We hung two banners – There Is No Planet B – to illustrate the urgency of the problem, and – Burn the Rich, Not Fossil Fuels – to name the culprits for our current climate predicament.

Hmm, how are we going to supplant the the entire sphere of polito-economic organization. Fuck it aim for the stars, but rest assured the fence post exists, and you may need to knock that thingy down, so that people can get reaquainted with thinking for themselves. And don’t be defeatist an slaughter those of us that arwnt collectivist. This cooperativist -individualist wall is an antique in need of demolishing, and it most definitely ain’t no classic. Fuck it who needs peace, when you can profit from being right. But Yeah stop poisoning humans/life in general/and the planet…if we can’t save ourselves the planet is toast, maybe we should focus on placing a greater demands on society to provide for ots own administration. Empires fall sharp pointy explody objects first, let’s not wait for that, because totalitarianism leaves little elbow room for fly poetry!!!!

Humans began subjugating and destroying each other, before we did the planet. The root of the peoblem lies in human relationships, environmental destruction is a reflection of the fear generated impulse to dominate others. The only way to get at the appendage of the problem, is threw the body of it, with is why I assume you suggest the dismantling of capitalism , as the mode of human organisation, and allocation of aggregate energies, is put to much to destructive use. I agree that cooperativism is necessary to over come the various obstacles we face. Tell me where I missed here.

And a little more of my silly reductionism. If the politico-economic model must be changed, wich it must. The model of political organisation being sufficently altered so as to allow the popular analysis, critique, and discovery of the ills of state capitalism, as well as the interest everyONE has in non coercive alternatives, seems the inescapable prerequite. OK back to my countdown, for the Mayan calendar…is Jesus back yet?

I’m struggling to follow exactly, but I was under the impression that you were saying in order for the planet to survive, people had to survive, which is obviously false.
