Spain’s “Indignados” and the Globalization of Dissent

Before Adbusters called on activists to Occupy Wall Street, thousands of Spaniards set up camp in Madrid’s iconic Puerta del Sol, and in public squares across the country. Now, as the occupy movement around the U.S. sets its sights on the longer term struggle for social and economic justice with movements like Take Back the Land and Occupy Our Homes, the Spanish experience has valuable lessons to offer what is now a globalized popular front.

This is an amazing video about the similarities–and more importantly, the differences–between what’s going on here and in Spain.
I found it fascinating that in both countries, the rhetoric about blaming the victims of the economic system for their suffering is identical. In Spain, people are being blamed for overextending their debt and spending too much–particularly on mortgages–and you hear that same language here. The capitalists are raking in the profits through deceptive borrowing and unregulated banking, but it’s the people’s fault for falling for these tactics.
One difference was the point that Yarza makes at the end. The Spanish seem at this point more focused on the idea of inclusion: that people with different opinions or viewpoints can be included in their movement and that they actually help to refine it. In the US, the efforts of protesters tend to be almost universally presented in black and white. If you don’t agree with every point being made by those who control the voice of the protest, you are excluded automatically. Over the years that I’ve been involved in activism, I’ve seen this over and over again, and it’s made me demotivated a number of times. It’s one thing when you’re being demonized by those who are threatened by your message; it’s quite another when it happens with those with whom you want to stand with..

Desde finales de febrero, los estudiantes quebequenses protagonizan un movimiento de huelga histórico contra un aumento de la matrícula universitaria de 1625 dólares en cinco años (o sea 325 dólares por año). Este aumento, impulsado por el gobierno liberal actual, significa un incremento de la matrícula del 75 %. El 22 de marzo, cerca de 200.000 personas participaron en una manifestación gigantesca. A dos meses del inicio de la protesta, aproximadamente 180.000 estudiantes siguen en huelga sin por ello obtener una respuesta del gobierno. Peor aún, mientras se les exige a las asociaciones y federaciones de estudiantiles que condenen las acciones violentas, la violencia que emana del gobierno adquiere proporciones desmesuradas. Esta represión se vivió:
– En el marco de intimaciones judiciales obtenidas por las administraciones universitarias contra los huelguistas. Las universidades fueron el teatro de actos de violencia física y verbal e intimidación por parte de agentes reclutados entre las agencias de seguridad con vocación más represiva. Tanto estudiantes como profesores han sido víctimas de estos atropellos.
– Durante manifestaciones que ocurrieron al margen de estas intimaciones judiciales. Tal es el caso de la que se efectuó el jueves 19 de abril en solidaridad con los estudiantes de la Universidad de Quebec en Outaouais, en la que hubo cerca de 150 detenidos. Varios estudiantes presentes en la manifestación atestiguan con relatos vibrantes que las fuerzas de seguridad ejercieron una violencia gratuita contra los manifestantes e incluso contra personas mayores.
-Durante manifestaciones estudiantiles y ciudadanas tales como la que se ha efectuado el viernes 20 de abril en ocasión de la Muestra del Plan Norte, en el Palacio de Congresos de Montreal. Hubo 17 detenidos, hechos de violencia increíbles y traumatizantes, así como numerosos heridos.
En cuatro días, hubo aproximadamente 400 detenciones en Quebec en el marco del movimiento de huelga quebequense actual.
Porque tal despliegue de violencia policíaca, ante un movimiento estudiantil hasta entonces relativamente pacífico y que tolera desde hace dos meses la indiferencia y el desprecio de su gobierno, no es digno de un país realmente democrático. Porque manifestar es un derecho y porque la salud de una democracia se mide por su capacidad de dar espacios a la protesta.
FIRMEMOS ESTA PETICIÓN PARA PONER FIN A ESTA VIOLENCIA POLICÍACA VERGONZOSA EN DEMOCRACIA . Tal violencia es inaceptable frente a un movimiento estudiantil que reivindica el carácter.
