Media Bites – Nissan Exploits Polar Bears
September 14, 2010
In this week’s Media Bites we take a look at a new Nissan commercial that tries to appeal to the public’s emotions about climate change by manipulating how polar bears think about human behavior.
The commercial doesn’t make us think about global warming in systemic way, rather we are led to believe that if we just buy something we can save the planet. This is a growing theme presented by corporations and defenders of capitalism.

thank you for pointing this out…. I am so saddened/grief stricken by the thought of the polar bear’s plight that I soaked this right up. And what you’re saying is so true… it is a pathetic
manipulation of people who DO care and who are desperate to DO SOMETHING that will be in the right direction since our politicians have abandoned us and offer no meaningful measures…
Monica, thanks for your comments. It is disgusting to me that corporations are manipulating the public and taking advantage of the growing concerns over global warming and species extinction. For me Green Capitalism is seductive, but just as unsustainable as it has always been. We really need to question an economic system that is predicated on constant growth.
